Janet Kenyon is
a singers dream! The world renowned vocal coach has spent the last
20 years helping her clients improve skill and technique while
paying great attention to developing the true artists within! A
skilled performer herself, Janet understands the need for a balance
between these two areas. Without a strong technique, a singer is
limited and faces years of frustration with strain and cancelled
shows. Without an individual style and sound, who cares?
For that reason Janet focuses on the complete artist. Increasing range? Sure! But when was the last time you heard an artist at the Grammys introduced as 'a singer with a four octave range! ' There is so much more involved. No one area can be ignored. Flexibility, range, breath management and stamina are crucial for a singer. But phrasing, tone, delivery, dynamics and expression are just as important.
With a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in music education, Janet began her successful teaching career as a faculty member at Belmont University's commercial music program where she taught for 11 years. During that time she gained a greater understanding of what a singer really needs to know to be noticed and succeed in this very tough music industry.
For that reason she decided to leave Belmont in 2003 and start her own private studio in the heart of Nashville's famous Music Row. With the flexibility of her own studio, Janet is free to focus on each individual artists needs instead of a rigid formatted approach. No cookie cutter teaching here! Each student has their own specific needs and Janet is a master at quickly identifying those and tackling them head on.
For proof of that, just take a look at her client page! Her students are as varied as she is! Country artists like Lady Antebellum and Josh Turner, soulful singer Melinda Doolittle (American idol), pop and rock artists Jordin Pruiit or Tyler Bryant just to name a few. Her teaching prowess speaks for itself. Janet has worked with numerous labels such as Warner Brothers, Lyric Street, Sony, Hollywood Records, Hi Fi Records and Big Machine. Her reputation for results has her in demand by labels and management companies throughout the U.S and abroad. She has also been a featured expert on television networks including Fox, NBC, GMC and the United Kingdom's ITV network.
An active performer and studio singer, Janet has performed with artists like Jonny Lang, 3 Doors Down, Selah, Motley Crue, Lyle Lovett and numerous other national and locally successful artists. She currently tours as a background vocalist with the amazing singer, Melinda Doolittle (who is still a student)! Staying involved as a performer helps Janet stay current on what a singer needs to know!
With a great passion for music and performing Janet has high standards for herself as a teacher and for those she chooses to work with.
"I can't handle a lazy singer! My desire is to work with artists who have a strong work ethic, who love what they do and want to continue to get better as every year goes by. Anything else is an insult to the craft I love so much."
Through private instruction in her studio, lessons via skype for those outside of Nashville, and her instructional products available on her store site, Janet is doing exactly what she dreamed of - encouraging, empowering and equipping today's artists!
